John Rutherford’s interview with Homi K. Bhabha

Hybridity is a cross between two races/cultures. However, in Rutherford’s interview with Homi K. Bhabha, he refers to it as the ‘third space’. Not just two things mixing together, but the space between it and creating new things between these two cultures. “Hybridity to me is the ‘third space’ which enables other positions to emerge” (Bhabha, 211)

“Identification is a process of identifying with and through another object, an object of otherness,” (Bhabha,211). So we can identify with a culture but not with two. We cannot label and categories because then that would mean we have multiple identities and that is uncertain to just one, in which is what identifying means. Being organised into one. However, hybridity is an identification, the third space, in which we can identify in. It is the space in which we are who we are. Two different cultures can sit between this third space, however if mixed, they are incompatible. It is essentially like a singular space in which everyone can identify with, as it is their own.
